You can sway evenly to a song while the singer holds long notes or sings several short syllables. You are hearing different layers of musical time. The pulse is the regular succession of beats underlying your swaying. Rhythm comes from the timing and different durations of sounds. A melody can change its rhythm while the pulse continues steadily. Sometimes that pulse is clearly audible; sometimes it is only faintly suggested. Individual sounds do not have to coincide with every beat.
Which level of musical time you hear
Tempo describes the speed of this pulse. At 60 beats per minute, successive beats are one second apart. If you also count the evenly spaced midpoint between them, you get 120 counting pulses per minute. The recording has not become faster: you have chosen another counting level. BPM values can therefore be compared unambiguously only when it is clear which level counts as the beat.
Beats can also form recurring groups. This metrical organisation is expressed in bars, also called measures. In 3/4 time, three quarter-note beats belong to a bar; in 4/4, there are four. When you repeat “one, two, three, four”, the next one names the beginning of another group. Here, the lower four in the time signature stands for the quarter-note value. It does not tell you how fast the music is played. Meter and tempo answer different questions: how time is organised and how quickly the chosen unit passes.
How a beat divides into smaller units
Regular organisation can also occur within a beat. The jig in Scottish country dancing provides an example: the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society explains its 6/8 time as two larger beats, each divided into three smaller units. You can speak this grouping as “one-two-three, two-two-three”. Six smaller units form two groups of three. In this reading, the upper six therefore does not mean six equally prominent larger beats. Hearing the subdivision is part of understanding the meter.
Counting can also group several bars together. Two bars of 4/4 contain eight quarter-note beats; Berklee PULSE uses this length for a musical count-in, for example. Applying that grouping to an eight-count in dance places one and five at the beginning of the two respective bars. The numbers six to eight extend your verbal overview. They do not turn the music into a bar containing eight quarter-note beats. A bar boundary and the end of your counting sequence need not be the same event.
The rhythm of a danced basic variation
A basic variation can form its own rhythm over this organisation of time. Bath Zouk explains one foundational model with weight transfers on 1, 3, 4, followed by 5, 7, 8 in its eight-count. More time passes between 1 and 3 than between 3 and 4, producing slow-quick-quick. The omitted 2 remains a point in time even though no further weight transfer starts there. This model describes the timing of weight changes. It does not require the rest of the body to stop on an unspoken number.
The position of such a sequence can itself become a dancing decision. In her teaching on Brazilian Zouk and Lambada, Devon Near-Hill distinguishes counting, order and context. She covers starts on 1, 3, 5 and 7, as well as changes using quicks and slows. This is a specific teaching perspective on different timings. The same movement order can occupy a different place in the count. A deliberate change shifts the movement’s relationship to the music. Understanding it involves considering the movement order and its musical starting point separately.
