When a couple dances in a film, the story gives their closeness meaning. For the American film Dirty Dancing (1987), screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein combined holiday memories with an invented romance. She also wanted to include social conflicts. By her account, the film does not retell her own youthful romance with a dance teacher. Yet she received letters from women who thought Johnny was based on a former crush. Familiarity and fiction can come very close. What feels like a memory of a real encounter may be carefully written.

The physical partnership is also shaped for the film. Choreographer Kenny Ortega recalled in 2017 that Patrick Swayze brought experience of ballet and pas de deux: dancing with a partner and helping prepare movements together. For the filming in the lake, Ortega also described a specially built submerged platform. Dance skill and technical support were part of this production. That matters when considering expectations for our own partner dancing: a filmed sequence shows a situation created for the shoot.

Playing a beginner for the camera

In the 1996 Japanese film Shall We Dance?, even being a beginner is part of the performance. In 2025, director Masayuki Suo recalled how Koji Yakusho had already trained extensively for the role and become a capable dancer. For the early scenes, he had to play an inexperienced beginner again. Suo was particularly impressed by a spontaneous expression of frustration. Acting can tell a story of learning even when preparation has already gone much further. Awkwardness on screen tells us little about what the performer could actually do during filming.

Where does the romance lie?

The meaning of the relationship also changes how we understand the dancing. Suo described his film as a discovery of the love of dance. Tamiyo Kusakari emphasised that her character Mai recognises Sugiyama’s growing interest in dancing and comes to respect him. Suo wanted to encourage self-expression. In Western responses, he was surprised by the emphasis on a midlife crisis. This was his account of those different readings in 2025. In his interpretation, the encounter leads to a new relationship with dancing itself.
